Summer of Silence
Published in Paperback by Electronic Media (September, 1998)
Average review score:

Great insight on the plight of Slovenians during/after WWIIThis book traces the plight of three sisters who are left behind in Slovenia at the time of the Communist takeover following WWII. The author provides great insight as to the plight endured by the Slovenian people during and after the war. It is a genuine, insightful and well written first person account of the injustices which took place following the war. It is one of the few accurate historical accounts that has been translated to English. The truth of the atrocities which took place has just become public in the last few years. Thank you Mara for sharing your story!

Summer of the Green Star
Published in Hardcover by Westminster John Knox Press (March, 1981)

10 years or more...can't forget it...I can't remember the year I read this book, but I remember being young and impressionable...being a self proclaimed hopeless romantic, i must say that this book was the beginning of my romantic thought...the chance that anything is possible! It's a nice feeling...So, now I sit here and I'm looking for this book that i read when I was about 9 or 10, and I'm hoping to read it again...I don't want to give anything away, but the story truly has some nice twists for a young reader--excitingly romantic (in that puppy love way) and truly a 'page-turner'...

The summer of the Spanish woman
Published in Unknown Binding by Collins ()
Average review score:

A must read...Summer of the Spanish Woman is a wonderful book that blends a romance with the terrible times of World War I. I have read this book twice and keep it in my collection as one of my favorites. I am looking to see if Ms. Gaskin opted to write a sequel to this wonderful novel.

A Summer Place
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harlequin (01 December, 2002)
Average review score:

A Beautiful Story! When Laurel Eden chooses Belleport, a quaint Lake Michigan town, in which to set up her crafts shop, she feels she has been drawn to the place, but she doesn't understand why. And when she meets town attorney Ben Nolan, she feels she has found a man with whom she can open up and be herself--the carefree, laughing person she was before her stifling, trophy wife marriage. Ben finds Laurel and her Carpe Diem attitude unique. He's drawn to her as to no other, but his plate is full with caring for five needy siblings and his mother following the death of his dad, a Vietnam vet.
When Katherine Sullivan befriends Laurel, she sees something in this young woman which prompts an investigation that will have a far-reaching effect on Laurel and her ex-hippie parents, and on Laurel's relationship with Ben.
This is a meaty book, wonderfully written, that explores the human soul. Ms. Abbott's grasp of both sides of the Vietnam conflict provides a depth to this story, and her wonderful characterizations make these people come alive. Caution: Read this book with a supply of hankies on hand. The principal characters' dilemmas make for tearful reading, but the story's satisfying conclusion will warm the cockles of your heart.
